Society of Young Inklings

Writers Circle (ages 10-14)

with Erin Halden

Ages: 10 - 14

$300

Join a small circle of dedicated writers who will encourage, provide specific feedback, and inspire you!

In your Writers Circle, you will draft and revise a collection of pieces for your creative writing portfolio. Alternately, writers who are mid-process on a novel are welcome to focus on this major creative project in our sessions.

In each session, you will:

  • participate in games and activities to build characters, develop story-worlds, and experiment with plot and genre techniques.
  • explore practical strategies to strengthen your writing craft.
  • share and discuss your creative work.
  • look at your peers' writing and offer constructive feedback.
  • learn to discuss creative work in a way that supports another writer while also helping you further your own skill set.

Your group will be facilitated via Zoom by Erin Halden. You’ll connect with youth writers from around the country who are passionate and committed to their creative projects, just like you.

Through the 10 weekly sessions of your Writers Circle, you’ll learn new tools and strategies to strengthen your writing craft skills and be inspired by ideas and writing by creative peers.

Day/Time: Wednesdays at 5:15 PM PT
Dates: 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19 (10 sessions - weekly)

Instructor Bio:

Erin Halden
Erin landed her first writing gig at age eight, when she named herself editor of Spot News, the leading daily newspaper on Jupiter. After that, she wrote her own book of myths – this time with GIRLS in them – and rewrote scenes from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe so that Lucy led the charge instead of her brother.

After earning degrees in creative writing and journalism, she worked in the grown-up (but still fun) world of documentary television, producing, directing, and writing more than fifty shows and specials. But she missed making stuff up. So she started writing fiction again, and got her MFA in writing for Very Wise People, a.k.a. children and young adults. She’s excited to be a part of the Society of Young Inklings.

Erin lives in a 104-year-old house in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband, three kids, and a dog who thinks she’s a cat.
